What is a ropes course or challenge course?

How is it used at the Land Lab?

The Land Lab uses both Elements (ropes, wires or logs permanently affixed in the woods) and Initiatives (activties that can be done indoors or outdoors with minor props). Students come typically in the fall or spring to work with their grade level or team to get to know each other, do some reflection or just have some fun!

Ropes Challenge Course programs typically involve small groups of participants over an intense period of hours or a few days, in a series of activities which increase in difficulty and focus variously on participants' physical, emotional, social, and intellectual capabilities.

The value of ropes course use is recognized in a broad range of activities, including education, recreation, therapy, and organizational development. Ropes Challenge Courses are often used in conjunction with other forms of training or education, such as in physical education, in orientation programs, and for staff development. Ropes Challenge Courses can be used with school students through to adults and are readily adaptable to a wide variety of cultures, settings, and people with different abilities.

The Land Lab uses Project Adventure created activities to promote wellness, both physically and mentally. We work with Kindergarten students through adult groups to give them a variety of challenges that encourage team work, respect and focus.

We use the Adventure Curriculum for Physical Education developed by Project Adventure to make sure that students who return to our course year after year get a new, exciting and more challenging program.

The summer camp program also offers a full week of low ropes activities for campers in grades 3-6.

To set up a day with the Land Lab to do low ropes activities, please contact us.
